Camp Dates for 2005 -2006 Drum Corps

We will be heading back to Brooks for Camps this year, now that we have confirmed Camp dates with Brooks I will be able to fill in all the local rehearsal dates so please stay tuned for updates.

We depart Fridays at 7pm for Brooks return 4pm on the Sunday of Camp. All Camps are at Brooks Composite High School.

keep spreading the word. Also please note Winterguard registration has been pushed back to Sept 30th.

Okay so you have probably noticed the extreme lack of posting over the last week, a couple of reasons, first it is hard to post info when you can't confirm due to facility availability etc, etc so this being said I decided to take a week or so off from posting. So things are starting to come together so we are back to regular posting.

First Street signs have gone up for the new Junior Guard program and the Percussion Ensemble program, I will also be calling all the members from last year with info on registration. Here though is some overall info with dates etc

Drummers

Percussion Ensemble registration will be Sept 27th for beginner students Sept 29th for returning members, this will be at the corps hall (#15 3650 19th ST NE) 7pm

For those interested in the Drum Corps, Oct 15th will be registration and first rehearsal Location and time to be announced

Colorguard/Dance

Winterguard programs will start Sept 23rd with Registration at Bishop Kidd Junior High 1420 28st SE at 7pm

Hornline

Drum Corps Registration and first rehearsal will be Oct 15th, Location to be announced

Regular Rehearsal Schedule

Tuesday and Thursday Percussion Ensemble 6:00 to 7:30 ages 9 to 11, 7:45 to 9:15 ages 12 to 14
Fridays Winterguard/Dance rehearsal 6:30 to 8:30 ages 9 to 13 , 7:00 to 10:00 ages 14 to 21

Every Second Saturday Drumcorps Rehearsal 1 to 5pm or full weekend camp (Fri, Sat Sun), on non drumcorps Saturdays we will have Friday night sectionals for new members of the Drum Corps. Senior Winterguard members will attend all drumcorps camps.

So a big change for the corps will be the absence of the regular full corps Friday rehearsal. This will be replaced with new members having sectional time, and then a bi weekly full corps rehearsal. So the Drum Corps will have its first registration/rehearsal Oct 15th 1pm to 5pm.

The first registration will be Sept 23rd for both Senior and Junior level winterguards. Followed by Percussion Ensemble Sept 27th and 29th.

Here is a email recieved from a very kind gentleman that helped us in Rome NY

It was a pleasure to meet you in Westmoreland, NY and be able to assist you in the purchase of food items for the corps. I hope the stay was enjoyable even though it was a short one. Seeing you perform was the highlight of the day for my wife and I.

My first experience with drum corps was with a small corps of about 75 younger kids. I know what a chalange it is to prepare them for a long season and performances. You can be proud of them and my congratulations to all the hard working parents who support the youth of our communities.

Having cooked for the Cadets of Bergen County for 8 years, it was nice to see that you had a friendly staff who seemed to work well together, Being "old" and forgetful, my appoligies for not remembering the name of the ladies that I took shopping. I'm sure they enjoy the time spent with the corp and I hope the "newbees" will return for another season.

If you plan to be in our area of Central New York another year, please let me know so I can give you my support and provide you with my knowledge of stores etc. (discounts and values).

Allegiance Elite - they have a great show design -
they didn't perform it as well as it could be expected
- the heat got to the keyboards as at times they had a
very different pitch from the horns. The guard was the
strong point for me - very expressive and they dance
really, really well.

Finals!!!!

Tonight we where at finals as we looked towards a great ending to a great season. The season has been a great success so far so any ending would be perfect as the kids have worked very hard.

The morning was filled with age out speeches and the usual fun run thru, with tears shed for some very long time age outs we where all geared up for a great night.

Well things worked out great, show wise a slight tear in the 2nd tune made things more interesting so we where all anticipating the final score.

An 80.675 was the result, this being the first return to the 80's since 2002 and a 6th place overall.

I only have a short time to post so I will write in more detail tommorow but all the corps spirits are high as we celebrate the end to a great season!!!!

Prelims

So tonight was the first night of the DCI week as we arrived into Boston late last night as we took full advantage of some great housing in Pittsfield as the fields and the building maitenance was very accomadating to the corps. Arriving late into Boston we where presented with a unique housing challenge, staying in an indoor tennis facility that has never housed a corps before and was looking for our stuff to be moved daily and other requests that would make our stay difficult. So last night we where all wondering if this was going to work.

Well after a lot of talking and explaining what we need and why, this facility is turning into one of the best!!! The showers are country club quality and they have been more than welcoming, as we now have our own space and don't have to move at all. It is always funny how the worst of situations turn out to be the most memorable.

Well onto the show as we entered prelims earlier tonight, coming in 6th overall we where in good shape to make the Thursday finals. I think the full corps can agree tonight was a shaky start, as nerves and other variables played a part. The good side is we have been very consistent so our overall quality is still strong so a final score of 79.75 was measured with a we can come out and be stronger next time.

It is a good sign when the kids quality expectations are being raised on a daily basis, I think we all can't wait to Thursday to get out and really lay down the show that we want to. So a strong performance but still not that one that we are all looking for. With that score we advance to Thursday finals in a 6th spot, something that we are all very proud of.

Tommorow is Individual and Ensemble competitions as we have a few members competing.

Allegiance Elite Percussion Ensemble #1 will be a full mixed ensemble group

So a short rehearsal block, then of to Downtown Providence for I&E and then free time for the rest of the day, Thursday will be short rehearsal and then Div 2/3 Finals, Friday free day and Div 1 Semifinals and Saturday is the big Div 1 finals show and then home!!!!

So a great day and an anticipation to a big Thursday, this week is all about enjoying the fruits of our labor. Stay tuned for the Allegiance Elite I&E results!!!!!

Ageing out in Boston.

As many people know I have been a member of Allegiance Elite for the past 9 years. This year I finally age out of the corps. I have been a member of the percussion section for all 9 years and this year I am section leader for the entire line. Some of you will also know me because of the Allegiance Elite Jr. Percussion Ensemble and various marching programs around the city. Now as we are one day away from my last prelims show I sit here and wonder what I am going to be doing next year at this time. I have been a member since I was 12 years old and I honestly cannot remember a summer and what I did during it before this. And I know that when get home from this years tour in a week I am going to be ready for the next years tour. But that's not the case. That's why this tour I have tried to enjoy every second of it and make the most of it. I have spent so many nights just sitting by myself outside looking up at the sky and saying to myself wow I am really lucky to have done this for 9 years. I look at some of the rookies who are 12 years old and say to myself I hope that they can recieve as much from this activity as I have. Not only has Drum Corps made me a better player but it has made me a better person, and I know it has done that for a lot of people as well. So when our director Anothony asked me to post a blog I had no idea on what to write. I still don't. I don't know how to put what I am feeling right now into words but I am going to try. I am so happy because I am ageing out in the best Drumline in Div. 3 so far. I am happy because I am ageing out with 70 of my closest friends. I am happy to actually be ageing out of Drum Corps as I know some people have not had the chance. And to those who are still marching keep going to your age out it is completely worth it. As I keep thinking of things right now there is nothing the makes me sad about ageing out. Therefore tomorrow as I get to do one of my last run thru's, and last shows, and last shower, and last of a lot of things I will not be shedding tears of sadness, but of Happiness.

As this is a great opportunity to do this right now I am going to do it. I would just like to say thanks to every Instructor, Mom or Dad, Members, and anybody else who has made my time in Drum Corps the best time of my Life.

The Last Week

The blog I hear has been a hit back home as I have recieved great emails saying thanks for the updates, keeping everyone in touch with what has been happening with the corps over the course of the season is the eact reason for this blog, so it is great to hear that people appreciate and are keeping up with what is happening with the corps. It is pretty cool to look over some of the past posts and see the progression we have made over the course of the season and how the next week is a large part of this whole process that we have been working on this season. It is also great to start thinking ahead to the fall as we look to 2006 as a season of extreme possibility.

Some of the exciting projects that will take off for 2006 are

- the introduction of a tiered winterguard program 2 winterguards will be starting one junior level 9 to 12 and one senior 13 to 21, with the success of the summer colorguard we are excited to focus more on the winterguard portion of our program and make it a program that is strong in its own right. Programs like this are very common with our American Drum Corps organizations so we are looking to this as not only a strong stand alone program but a support and training ground for the drum corps.

- the expansion of the Percussion Ensemble program, we hope to double the size of this program and start to introduce marching percussion into the curriculum, as the demand is in place to have a traditional percussion ensemble program as well as a marching side to the program as well. We also hope to tie this program to the quality instruction happening in the main drum corps percussion progam as is evident in the current success of the drum corps percussion program.

- and of course the continual building of the drum corps program, Chad Huel will be very involved in the look and feel of the program as he takes on a more full time role and we hope to tap into the Luther Appel's and Mark Dunton's to continue to program and help the overall design process.

As we are in the last week of the season things are feeling great as we all know that even though 2005 is coming close to the end 2006 is looking very exciting as we look to represent Alberta Drum Corps as well as offer kids a unique and quality experience.

September will be a great month of meeting new faces and getting things rolling so keep tuned for registration dates as well as how you can be involved, as volunteers are the lifeblood of our activity.

Manchester and Pittsfield

Well it has been tough to get on the internet lately so I apologize for the lack of updates, the last couple of days have been pretty great for the corps as we have had a couple of strong nights, so I will start will Manchester.

Manchester was the last regional of the year and is 2 day event, they basically split the corps over 2 nights. We had a free day the day before in Boston so we where well refreshed and ready to go. So a very strong performance was rewarded with a 79.875 and a second place finish. These scores are then compared to the second night which was of course tonight, so overall we are sitting in 5th with a high percussion win over the 2 nights. Scores are secondary to our overall plan here but it is a nice reward for the kids to know that there hard work is being recognized. As we all know the numbers game is one that feel great one day and then make you feel worse the next so our goal is to focus on the larger picture of enjoying the last few days as a group and appreciate one another. With some of us aging out this year as well each moment has to be appreciated.

So today we where in Pittsfield and the corps had a nice night performing in the oldest baseball stadium in the US, with a 1st place finish and a score of 78 we are going to head into a day of rehearsal as we get ready for Tuesday's prelims.

So we continue along the competitive path, on the other side of things we recently had our kitchen trailer inspected by the City of Manchester and we passed with flying colors, our kitchen trailer is top notch so it was great to show off our facility to the DCI people and the city of Manchester.

We also had a great free day in Boston as all went well, a little rain but overall all the kids had a great time experiencing the beautiful downtown of Boston.

We are also getting ready for ageout ceremonies which will be especially tough as Donnie Saviak, David Jones, Megan Mulligan and Andrea Zalasky are all aging out. It will be a personal honor to watch these guys during the age out ceremonies this wednesday at quater finals as Donnie and David I actually marched with and as a first year Director this will be one of my proudest moments to watch these age outs become the class of 2005.

I will try to post again later tonight as I am off to put the corps to bed as a great day tommorow is expected as we appreciate and savour the last days of the 2005 season.

Rome NY

Today we have been in Rome Ny for the day as we had an afternoon competition and then we have stayed for the evening Division 1 show, lets start with this afternoon.

The heat was a factor as the morning run thru was hot 92 ish, this was then into a pre show warm up in the heat and then of course into a field show on astro turf in the heat. the ability to focus regularly is tough but in the heat much more difficult.

All in all things went well as a second place finish with a score of 76.1 was our result. So spirits where up as a good score can always help with the heat.

This evening the kids where able to take in the Phantom Regiment as well as the Boston Crusaders, it is always great for the rookies to get there first Open Class experience as seeing how far the activity can be taken is always cool.

Tonight a late drive to Manchester and then a short rehearsal into our free day in Boston, so a day off to see the sites will be appreciated.

Saturday we are in New Hampshire for the last regional before the week in boston.

Tommorow hopefully no heat!!!!

Kitchener for 2 days

So we are currently in Kitchener for the last couple of days, we had a show last night with a 2nd place finish with wins in the High Percussion and High Colorguard captions. It was great to finally get a late start and be under the stadium lights, the kids did a great job as the distance between the field and the stands made projection and energy a must.

Today we are having a rehearsal day before we head back to the US to Rome for an afternoon Div 2/3 show and then we will be staying the night to watch the Div 1 show as the kids will get the first taste of the open class drum corps. On Friday we are off to Boston for a free day before we have the last regional show on Saturday in Mass. Boy the days are flying by as Boston prelims are next Tuesday.

We have had Karen and Dan join us and the new fresh faces are awesome, the extra energy is infectious as we head down the stretch. We have had our generator go down yesterday, we had a mechanic in to take a look and it looks like it will not be fixed until we return home. So Dan has been hard at work at getting the plug in working on the truck as we will have to plug in for the last week, shouldn't be a major problem more of an inconvience. With the heat the generator was being pushed to the limit so we will have this fixed when we get home.

So Boston is fast approaching and after today we have limited rehearsal time as the fun of the Boston Free day and the quickness of the DCI week will make these next few days very hectic.

So next up is a border crossing tonight and then a full day in Rome NY tommorow!!!

buffalo

We are currently in a truck stop in buffalo as the kids are loading up on bus goodies, we have just finished a show in buffalo which was a little rushed as traffic and a late departure from our housing made it a tight squeeze at the gate. The kids in great fahion put out solid show in an extremly difficult situation as the field and stadium conditions where extremely tough. This was the first div 2 3 show in buffalo and dci is using it a precursor to the div 1 show that is coming up later in the week. A rain delay at the end made decide to leave early as we have a border crossing as well as last night's 8 hour drive makes everyone anxious to get some floor time tonight.

Opps our score tonight was 72.6

So tommorow we are in tavistock outside kitchener, with a show in the evening. Following that we have a full rehearsal day which will actually be our last full rehearsal day.

Only 7days left until prelims as 2005 is close to an end. Faces will change and the corps as we know it will cease to exist, so each day passing will bring us closer to our ending, so kitchener will be our last concentrated push, as the 2005 Allegiance Elite.

On the pics side of things all servers we have tried are currently blocked for mass email so it will be awhile before we are able to post.

Sunday Rehearsal Day

Last night we moved laundry up so we could get in a full day of rehearsal today as we have quite a bit on the plate for the show and today is a great day to get some of these things done as we head into a strong week of shows. Things we are working on include

- addition of the big box into the end of the show
-cleaning the big box at the begining of the show
- addition of colorguard work into Plagues
- closing of drill spots due to injurys that have forced some members to a standing on the sideline and playing role as these injuries will not heal in time for Boston

Last night we had a 6th place finish among 13 corps, a afternoon start in the heat did not help the cause so we are all feeling we can improve upon the performance when we step off in Buffalo tommorow night. Score wise a slight dip to 70.8 but not unexpected as we had basically no rehearsal time between this and the last show.

Today we are also starting our kickball league (soccer baseball) as we have 4 teams and we will have games every non show day, the kids are hyped as we want to use this as a team building/break from drumcorps activity to keep our minds fresh and relaxed.

I will get another member to post at lunch as well we are still working on the pics so be patient.

When you are on tour you sometimes forget the little things in regular life that you use everyday. Having not touched a computer in about 3 weeks it is kind of weird to be typing at the edge of a rehersal field watching Yamato run drill sets. I guess I should introduce myself. This is Josh, I’m a baritone player in Allegiance Elite. So, I have no idea when Anthony’s last update was, so I’ll go back about 2 days ago. We got some major rehearsal time in Houston, MN where a major jump in rehearsal intensity took place. Our own Mr. Bisson started to get on the field and in our face, challenging how much work we all actually want to put into making the 2005 Allegiance Elite a major player in the Division III arena. For the whole day there were drill changes and upgrades in the musical demand. I think we actually started to sound like a real drum corps that day. As the evening progressed a very peculiar thing started to happen. About every 10 minutes or so some of the local town folk would trickle into the stands and watch us rehearse. This continued until our run though at about 9:30. By that time the high school football stadium was packed with people, overflowing onto the sidelines. It was difficult to comprehend why 250 people would give up their free time for a night just to come and watch some kids from Canada run around on a football field banging on things, spinning pieces of metal and vibrating our lips. But as we were doing the run though I realized something. We had developed into performers. People just weren’t clapping for us because we were their children or because they were impresses with how hard we work. They clapped for us because we excited their senses, and caused emotion to swell inside of them. There aren’t very many people in the world that can say that in one summer they have broken into the hearts and minds of over one thousand people. We all do drum corps for many reasons, but I think that that is one of the most rewarding. I do it to stay in shape, meet some cool people, travel, see some cool groups, but nothing compares to the feeling you get when you have just nailed a MFL (mother frickin loud) release and the crowd goes nuts. That’s the kind of thing that you remember when you look back on how you spent some of the best years of your life.

So, that’s it for me. I kinda just used up my whole lunch break/show prep time. I just want to give a shout out to the great people who make this tour what it is, like the cook moms and the truck drivers, they’re awesome. And those other drum corps in Boston better watch out.

It’s day 11 of Drum Corp Survivor!!
So far Tracy, Michelle, Gail, Joy, & Dave have outlived & outlasted the immunity challenges set before us! And believe us there have been many! We have had the challenges of no water, no fridge/freezer, no cook truck, no sleep, the list goes on…..The rewards have been the Allegiance corps members……they have been GREAT! They might be sick of our sense of humour by now, but rest assured they are being well fed & well entertained by the cook “moms & dad” Another reward was the wonderful performance of the whole corps last night in Lacrosse. Their show was amazing and they proved that they have been working so hard…their score improved greatly and they received a standing ovation from the crowd! What a feeling to be a part of it all! We realized that this is why we do what we do. Be very proud of your kids cause they are AWESOME!

Michigan City

Well we are now in Michigan City after a show last night in Lacrosse, last night the kids had a strong perfromance as a first place in Division 3 was awarded with a 71.9 score, the first show jitters where gone as we had more presence and poise on the field. We also added the big box to the opening of the show and hope to have it in more as we go. So all in all a good night as the kids where feeling good about the performance.

The focus now shifts to the regional this afternoon here in Michigan City as this score will factor into our finals placement, and as we all saw in the first show of the year order is a huge factor in the judging process, so we need to have a strong show to help us in the future. We have an early step off as order for this show was a random draw so we will have to be strong.

So we are having a quick ensemble rehearsal and then show prep, and then off to the field, today 19 corps will be competing.

After the show we are moving our laundry day to tonight so tommorow we will be able to have more rehearsal time, this will work out great as the race right now is to have the cleanest show possible and every minute of rehearsal counts.

So we are feeling good, ready for a great regional show and then relax with some laundry tonight. The kids are working hard as expect your child to come home well tanned and a few pounds lighter lol...

We we are currently in Houston Minnesota about 1 hr outside of Lacrosse, we
have been here for the last couple of days after the Dubuque show as we are
prepping for the Show in LaCrosse tonight. The town of Houston has been
great as it seems the whole town is aware we are in town as are arrival was
preceded by a announcement in the town paper, emails across town, the high
school marching band coming out. All of this was evident as we had about
200 people show up for our evening run thru in the high school football
stadium, there where so many people parking was a problem. The town came
out and supported the kids and it was great, we will be sure to be back as
Houston, as well as Guttenburg and Devon have all come out in droves to
watch the kids just rehearse!!!!

The show in Dubuque a couple nights ago was interesting as we got our first
show jitters out against groups that had a few under the belt. Tentative
and reserved would be ftting for the performance as a early step off time
was aalso a factor. Getting comfortable in a show setting is a process and
we hope to have all this worked out tonight namely as we look towards
Michigan City Regional tommorow afternoon. We have been working on
getting out and just performing and not being tentative. We hope Dubuque
was our first show get it out of our system show and a learning show of how
the game must be stepped up for performances.

So tonight LaCrosse and then off to Michigan City tommorow. Equipment wise
we have been doing very well as a all trucks are working great, so we hope
we have stopped all of the equipment problems. Show wise the Big pandora's
box will be in the show tonight as we hope this will help with some clarity
of thought. Everyone is working hard and we are looking forward to Michigan
City.

Show Day in Dubuque, check out www.dci.org for results, we are rehearsing the morning and then we are off to Dubuque which is about and hour away.

Yesterday was again an interesting day as we had a reefer problem that caused to have to empty the freezers into a temporary freezer and send the cook trailer to Madison (3 hrs away) to be serviced. The Moms where working hard to save everything and now it looks like we have saved everything except the ice cream :( the cook trailer left yesterday and now is back fully in service, it really goes to show how fortunate we are to have such a great facility to cook from.

The kids last night had a great rehearsal as we had stadium lights on a cool evening, i mentioned to the kids tha this is one of those drum corps moments, a nice evening block under the lights with dew on the field, classic. The run thru was a blast!!!

I also had a unique experience, the walk to the field is a little long so on the way I was stopped by the sounds of a German Brass Band rehearsing in a local garage. We stopped in for a listen, I introduced myself and was asked if I wanted to join them. Well I then ended up playing german polka/beer tunes for the next half hour on the trombone, with the 10 piece band. It was a blast big thanks to the Guttenburg German Brass Band for the fun, and hopefully they will be able to drop by rehearsal today.

So yesterday we where in St Cloud for the day as a stop over point as we head to Dubuque, we have been very fortunate with the rain lately and actually haven't really had a rain out day, well yesterday we got one!!! The rain came in at about 1pm and did not want to stop, we did manage to get run in but it was a lot of basics in the gym space, though we need those as well. We also got a late start on the day as the trucks had trouble finding the school, moving this amount on such a strict time line makes it tough for things to line up perfectly but it looks as thought the long hauls are finished for awhile.

this morning we are in Dubuque well not actually Dubuque we are in Guttenburg one hour north of dubuque, I like to call the home of Steve guttenburg lol, the kids are a little to young to think that one is funny as I have been told. The school sits right on the edge of the Mississippi so it is pretty cool to have a huge river outside our door basically. It has been raining alot so the field may wet, so hopefully we get some warm weather.

First show is tommorow and the kids can't wait, as we get to finally perform and get a check where we are at. It won't be about the score as it will be the journey to get to this point as shows are a great checkpoint on not only field show side of things but how the kids are learning in a general sense thru the season. The whole goal of this process will not be a score but the lessons learned thru the framework of a drum corps season, which we all know are way more valuable than others subjective opinion of the corps.

I will try to get Jay to take some rehearsal pics as well as some of the river to send to Jeff, we are in Guttenburg for the next 2 days so we should be able to keep things pretty updated.

So I have 2 ways of updating the blog and sending pics to jeff to post, one is ninas laptop and the other is the handheld that jeff hooked me up with (have I mentioned that jeff is the ae media guru) so we are on the bus heading to st cloud and now that we are in the us this handheld should work most of the time. So pardon the writing style as it a little keyboard.

Last night we crossed the border pretty easily and no major equipment troubles as yet, about an hour until St Cloud and then we will have breakfast and then rehearse. It is raining so it could be wet day.

Nina is flying in this morning, and I think mark and christian are excited to be so close to waconia.

So we are on the road, it has been a while since the last update and as we all know one day in the life of a drum corps feels like a week in the real world. We have completed the Alberta stretch of the summer tour and things have gone pretty well as we look to work out logistical bugs and fine tune our travelling systems.

Red Deer was the first stop on the tour as we where in town for a parade and then a showband show in the afternoon. It was a great day as Red Deer treated the corps great with a big lunch, use of a hockey stadium for rehearsal and the road supper. The kids also had a strong performance in the afternoon, as a first place tie with Round Up was the result. We where not able to have the guard in the pandora's uniforms nor the box props as time and lack of space where problems.

After Red Deer we where off to Edmonton for an early start and the Klondike days parade. The kids performed our standard La Copa Da la vida which is a fun lite hearted parade tune. Staying at Lister hall was a treat as the kids where in dorm rooms a uunheard luxury during tour. We rehearsed Friday and then had a quick stop on or way to Devon where we would be for Saturday rehearsal. '

Arriving in the rain the corps sleeping space was a little tight but by morning the rain was gone but the wind was bad. We also finally got the equipment truck back as it was delayed by by last minute repairs. Living without the truck for 3 full days on the road was interesting lol...

We performed a full uniform run thru for our Edmonton families we also had a large number of Devon folk come out to watch, it was actually a fair sized crowd and the kids though tired by a very windy day had a great run as we finally added the props as well as the Pandora's uniforms for the guard as well as our actual show flags.

So we are now in Estevan after a 13 hour bus ride, we had a couple of flat tires outside Regina which the drivers handled great, lunch was late but other than that no worries. The plan is a rehearsal day and then off to St Cloud tonight for 10hrs as well as a border crossing.

We are looking forward to Dubuque on Wednesday as it will be great to get into the thick of things.

Busy day today as it also will be a busy night.

Luther was off to the airport this morning and then Mark Dunton and Christian Gilbert flew in from Minnesota. Luther has been a great addition to the Allegiance team, his experience from working with great organizations like the Regina Lions and the Colts Drum and Bugle corps was invaluable to us gettting a great start on the year. Luther was able to help us with design and make sure we are on the right track in a general sense. I can't wait until next year to tap into Luther's great knowledge and experience once again, thank you Luther for all your help on making 2005 a great year.

Mark Dunton will now be taking over in Luther's absence, Mark recently brought his high school band Waconia, to the Stampede and they where a hit. He is 5 year vet of the Madison Scouts and an accomplished Band Director in Minnesota. He is here to clean the corps as we get ready for DCI competition, which is something that Mark is very good at, his attention to detail is great and his ability to motivate is awesome. I am also waiting to here from Chad Huel as he may be joining the corps for a week, I am thinking this will happen. The kids will be pumped to see Chad as they will be keen to show all the progress the show has had as well as gain his motivation to get better fast!!!

Concerns for Red Deer are fitting the show inside the Centrium, we will not be able to debut the props as we will be marching in a hockey arena, and our show is designed to fit in an American College style football field. We hope to squeeze in a little rehearsal time to take a look at this but we may have little time to prepare for this. The space will actually be smaller than the Saddledome as the boards will stay in place so this will be tricky.

The next 5 days will be great as we will have some quality rehearsal time as well as a West Ed Mall trip in as well on Friday.

As far as logistics we are packed ready to go, Edmonton will be great as I know the city well so if anything is needed it should not be a problem.

Okay today we are in a 9 to 9 rehearsal block as well as tommorow and the Tuesday is a day off for the Corps as packing and getting ready to leave for tour is on the menu.

Yesterday we had a nice change of pace as we where off to Three Hills for a parade, beef on a bun, rehearsal and then a little pool time. The City of Three Hills where great as the Corps had a great rehearsal spot, food and fun so a big thanks to Tim Sherlock who made the day great!!!!

We had a chance to work thru the closer and then a little ballad cleaning, today we are working on the opener and then into the closer. Tommorow we will put some more work into Plagues and namely sort out the boxes and how they are apart of the show and concept. We hope to have all changes finished by the time Luther leaves on Tuesday and then when Mark Dunton and Chooch come in on Wednesday and Sunday we are in a cleaning mode on tour with only light changes to the show.

The kids are putting in a great effort, yesterday we talked about how far we are in the process and how the hardest parts are yet to come, as the individual responsibility increases on tour. It will a lot of fun to see the progression of the Corps in the next couple of weeks.

Okay Stampede is over and we are now into another week of all days before we head out on tour, time is flying by as the best part of the summer is fast approaching and that is the DCI tour, competing nightly and everyone working towards Boston is fun exciting stuff and the corps can think of no better way to spend a summer.

I have been getting lots of congrats emails, sorry if I have not responded as the corps is keeping things a little busy lol... but thank you all for the kind words.

Another email was concerning the guard uniform and the presentation of the guard in general here is my response.

Hey thanks for the feedback!!!!

Yes we are still in "design mode" the uniforms you saw are not our show uniforms as the girls will be dressed in a "Pandora's Box" greek style uniform with different hair and make up, we are also adding 19 aluminum boxes to the show as well as one large 8ft box, the guard work is also about half complete at this point so the girls are standing for large chunks of the show. Our sewing crew is working overtime right now and we want to wait to unveil these uniforms as well.
The storyline of Pandora's box will also be more apparent in the next few days as with more costumes and props this will be more understood. We are using the color gold as a center point for uniforms as well as flags also the boxes will be a gold color as well.

We are very early in our season and we want to use the slow and steady approach as we work towards DCI, so look for lots of additions and a clearer depiction of storyline which will happen in the next week of all days as we get set to leave on tour on the 20th.

Our goal is to peak on Aug 13th in Boston so all decisions we are making are with the long term race in mind, as correcting incorrect design and writing is more time consuming than doing it right the first time.

Expect a much different show on the 20th in Red Deer and then stay tuned for our progress in the States.

So the plan for this week is to add the closer drill (shich has been taught but not performed), cut the ending to make it more effective, restage parts of the opener, shorten a part in #2, add more colorguard work as well as the Pandora style uniform.

The boxes will also be added as parts of the show are confusing as we are without them, but look for them to become a part of the storyline and thematic tone of the show.

As well we plan to step up our physical conditioning as we plan to gain strength in a general sense as we get closer to tour, i.e more running and more push ups!!!!

So a busy week as we leave on Wednesday and tour planning is now in high gear!!!!

Okay I am having a hard time getting in to post so please be patient as we all want news of how the corps is doing.

Last night was a very busy night that worked out super, as a great show with 8 great bands ended with a proposal (one that was accepted !!!!) and then a great time was had by all with the Party in the Parking Lot.

First the Show, highlights include all the great bands, the Australian Koalas, the Allegiance Elite Percussion Ensembles and the Summer Colorguard, as well as the first show of the year for the Allegiance Elite Drum Corps. The corps has been working very hard, we are still looking to add 19 alumninum gold boxes to the show, pit amplification, the closer drill as well as body movement.

Our season is just starting so you will see the show progress design wise as well as the strength of the members as we are at a basic level of body conditioning, as the members get stronger so will the performances. The hardest part of all this is that when we are at our strongest we will be in the States, but we plan to keep you all fully up to date on the corps progress thru web updates.

After the show I was able to finally put to rest the question "when are you getting married" as I proposed to my beautiful Alvina Vandale right on the 55 at the end of the corps performance, thankfully she said yes!!!! It was an awesome end to a great show as the crowd support was great, it has taken me a long time but hey great things take time lol.... Both of our parents came down as well as other family so it was the perfect spot to finally ask her the right question. Thanks to all and you can email pics to bissoonanthony@hotmail.com

After the show the party in the parking lot was great, over 700 fed and a drumline jam was rockin, the kids where able to mix and mingle with other bands. Thanks to all for hanging thru the long burger line up next year we will know what to expect and be ready!!!! It was a great end to a very busy day.

Okay, Wednesday is here, a drumcorps day seems like a week sometimes, I sure know the amount accomplished in a day is the same as a regular life week lol...

The Corps had a bit of a rough day yesterday as not enough water and the first real day of heat made it a little rough on the kids. Taking care of your body and making sure you are putting the right things into it are mandatory at this stage. We are undergoing a training program that demands all the members to be drinking water, eating right and keeping a postive attitude, the payoff will be a corps that can perform in any conditions and not be phased by heat or tough mental conditions.

Today has been a much better day, attitudes are great, more water does wonders and the feeling on the field is one of lets get some work done!!! The peaks and valleys will happen over the course of the summer so it is important to think long term and about why we are all doing this activity and that is to see what 70 kids on a football field can accomplish mentally and physically. So yes today is a better day!!!

The Colorguard camp kids have been awesome, there is nothing better than hearing stories of showing mom with a swifer how to spin lol.... Today we will combine the 2 guards and then tommorow we will be a full corps working together for the parade prep. Keep up the awesome work !!!!

What a Week!!!!!

I apologize for not being very diligent in my blog writing but to say the last few days has been hectic would be an understatement. The full corps has started and we are in the middle of things as we speak so where does one start.....

Canada Day

Off to Canmore which was great as this was the return of Allegiance to Canmore since 2002. We also headed off to Banff for an evening parade. The hornline was a small token of itself as we where missing over 3/4 's of the line. Out of town members unable to make it in time and other band commitments made it tough but we all had a great time as this was a chance for the rookies to shine. A great job was done as Canada Day in the mountains cannot be beat...

After Canada Day I was off to Edmonton for a early morning pick up of members, we returned in time to start the best part of the summer ALL DAYS!!!! The Corps has jumped head first into 9am to 9pm rehearsals with an eye towards getting ready for the upcoming Music Magic this Saturday at McMahon Stadium. Here are some recent show tips and highlights...

The addition of 19 Alumnium gold boxes as well as 1 large Aluminium framed box, these are currently in production and will not be fully intergrated until tour.

The hornline is still struggling with the loss of a few members as the Grandin Band is on tour, we will be adding these students very shortly.

Battery and Colorguard are in great shape, as the mix of members is great

So step by step we are learning the show, we are planning to take the slow approach and make sure we are solid on each piece as we want to catch as much stuff now than later. A drum Corps season is about endurance and working towards August 13th in Boston, others may want you to rush but the staff must be take each day with patience as it will pay off in the long run. Strength training, endurance, mental and physical strength are the hallmarks of a great Drum Corps and these are not skills acheived over night.

The Colorguard camp also started today, one word AWESOME!!! It is so great to introduce kids to a great activity and have them love it, and that is what this camp is all about, size wise we did not hit our target but we have a solid 12 kids in the program which is a building block to the future. I can't wait for the parade as these kids will have a great time!!! I will post detailed post on the future plans for the colorguard camp at a later date.

Okay so the week is moving quickly, other Corps in the States are scoring well and we are now fully in the game, training and getting ready is what it is all about, as we look towards July 27th in Dubuque to become fully immersed on the road to Boston.

The kids, staff, volunteers, parents are all working hard for great year!!!

So we have been rehearsing daily with the Battery, the pit joined us yesterday as we worked the percussion ensemble side of things. It has been a challenge to get rolling as rain and tons of mosquitos have made things a little tricky. When the full corps hits North Field this weekend you can bet that the bug spray will be in full use as you can be carried away in a hurry!!!!

The drumline is doing some great work as we expect them to have all the music ready for when the full corps comes in so when we jump into drill they will be playing straight thru.

Show wise Tannis is hard at work at the flags, colorguard uniforms are being done by Sue Jones, Laura is in on the 30th to fit the last few members in time for the parade.

Equipment wise the kitchen truck should be back tommorow and then Tracy and crew will jump in to start cleaning and stocking.

This weekend on Saturday Starting at 10am we are cleaning and working on the truck if you can make it let me know bissoonanthony@hotmail.com

I hope the hornline will come well prepared as being a horn guy I hate to see the hornline behind the drumline at any point, so the hornline will have to come ready to go on the 2nd!!!!

The boys have been out at North Field as the drumline has been having daily rehearsals. It has been tough to see all the American Corps out doing shows etc and know that we still have about a week before we can jump into all days. We have been trying to get a head start on the game by making sure we are well organized as far as game plan and show design so that we get a decent start on the 2nd, we will be rough in Calgary but the patience will pay off on tour as the summer competitive season does take somewhat of the priority overall, which is tough as most do not get to see our summer best as we will be in Boston when that happens.

Show design issues include addition of a prop for all colorguard girls with one large prop as a center piece. Amplification added to the pit section to feature pit sound in certain sections. As well as a full review to make sure we are thematically presenting Pandora's Box as a thru storyline.

It is always difficult to obtain a balance between making sure the kids have the basics of performance and then throwing at them extra's of story etc as bad performance can kill the effect that you are looking to achieve. So the more prepared we are performance wise as individuals the quicker we can jump into more effect driven ideas.

Drum Corps is all about achieving a great balance between performance quality in relation to effect with the effect side of the equation taking dominance in the last 5 years when the judging sheets changed, as it used to be more of a performance dominance of the overall score. Hence the dominance of the storyline show in recent times.

None the less the quicker we can get out on the field the better as warm weather means drum corps lol....

Michelle and the Alumni work very hard representing the local Drum Corps alumni and are very dissappointed that the reunion is a no go, so hats off to them for working hard. We also want to invite everyone out to the Party in the Parking Lot after Music Magic as this will be a great chance for all alumni, members, parents etc to hang out and touch base. I for one am curious to see who got married and who is having babies lol.. as every reunion this seems to be a common thread lol....

I hope to have an alternate performance for the percussion ensemble of which we should know by tommorow morning.

The drumline has started this morning with daily 4hr blocks, Daan, Thijs, Joel and Adrian all made it in to town over the last couple of days. All members should have been emailed or recieved parade music, if you have not please send me an email and I will get it out to you. This music will be for the Stampede Parade only. If you have any questions again give me a shout.

So today all of the drummers are coming in as we start drumline rehearsal this week, the end of the rain couldn't have come at a better time as we plan to head outside. Seeing how a large part of the battery is from out of town this next 10 days is a chance to get them all up to speed and set a foundation for the full corps starting at the end of the month. All members should be prepping for all days as we speak, some things that are good are

- stretching daily
- going for a run
- memorizing all music
- completing dot books with as much detail as possible
- all music etc organized
- reviewing the basic marching technique

All members are asked to come prepared as the more homework done before we start will allow us to get a great start when we rehearse as a full corps.

Packing and getting all of your tour gear ready is also a good call as the time frame once we start all days becomes tight so maybe plan that Wal Mart trip soon.

So the posting has slowed as the pre tour prep is ongoing as well as Summer Camp registration, Music Magic prep etc....

Big thanks to Stacey and Troy for all the Music Magic support, we have confirmed with 7 bands and we are looking to add 2 more, so make sure you come out on July 9th.

The Summer Colorguard camp is now half full with 10 students fully registered and 2 more registration nights to go, it is a first come first serve registration so make sure you are contacting the office to register asap as all 20 spots will be full soon. You don't want to miss out on a great chance to be a part of the Stampede parade!!!

The percussion ensemble is getting ready for its first performance next weekend at the Alumni reunion, we have added a few more players as this program is near the 20 mark, we where treated to a preview last night of the 12 to 14 year old class as they get ready. Great job guys and remember the key phrase "PRACTICE"

The Corps is still looking to fill its last 2 holes, 1 tuba and 1 baritone spot, if you know of anyone that is interested please contact bissoonanthony@hotmail.com as we would like to have these last spots filled before we start All Days on the 1st of July. So this afternoon was our Shaw TV shoot as we filmed for a profile of the corps which was more of a promo for the upcoming Summer Dance/Colorguard camp, big thanks to the Guard girls that came out Caroline, Allison, Iesha, Tara and Chelsea as well as to Donnie and Jessie for coming out to represent the drumline. Winterguard News - Formerly known as Expired...now known as Encorps!

The alumni winterguard has started it's 2005/2006 season.
This year we have many returning members along with new members and are always considering new entries into the membership. This upcoming competitive season will have closed rehearsals to insure the integrity of our professional educational setting, but there is always an open door when it comes to any questions you may have.
Aside from a number of local shows and parades, Encorps will be preparing for the WGI competition in San Antonio Texas on February 4th, 2006.We are very excited and proud to announce our new show Designer: Romee CaroGuest Designers:TBA
Our 2006 winter guard show is entitled "THE CHAOS THEORY" and will use the music of PEARL JAM. "THE CHAOS THEORY" will have it's count structure based upon a mathematical equation and also have a few other design secrets. The show will use modern, classical and experimental movement, equipment work and staging. It's clear, simple design will be accented by an elegant free flowing costuming designed exclusively for Encorps by Romee Caro.

Tour Changes

Geez you know you talk on the phone to much when 2 things happen, your ear gets sore and the cordless runs out of battery!!!

So busy day at the office as we have had an interesting few days.

The first major news is the tour schedule is now officially changed as the 2 Kansas Shows have been cancelled as well as the Texas show. This is good news for us as the drive to Kansas (2 days) and then Texas to Wisconsin (2 days) would have been hard on all. Now we will be able to stay in Edmonton longer and travel via Estevan/Regina and Fargo, with the centennial happening this year it will be great to include a couple of days in the province namely Edmonton.

A great weekend in Edmonton with the last of the "free" weekends taken the highlights included
- Crusaders Marching Band Reunion on Saturday as we look towards what is happening here in Calgary this month with the SDCAA and may try to host a similar Edmonton event for the Crusaders
- A seven year birthday party to Safety City

- Picked up wet saw for laying tile in the kitchen Thanks Wayne!!!!

Dan has been hard at work sandblasting and and putting primer on the equipment trailer, look for subtle changes as we spruce it up, the interior has been painted about %60 as the rain has made this difficult Thanks Staci and David!!!! The kitchen trailer will also be cleaned interior wise as well as exterior by mid next week.

Due to the rain we are moving rehearsal to Lord Beaverbrook tommorow night June 3rd, same times apply.

It is currently a forecast of %60 per cent rain so it is safe to head indoors for the night.

So the Allegiance Elite Alumni have been hard at work getting ready for the fast approaching reunion on June 25th at Canada Olympic park, Allegiance will have the Allegiance Elite Drumline as well as Junior Percussion Ensemble out playing as well as the Just Did It Drumline is scheduled to be out, if you saw them at the winterguard shows you will know that they are fan favorites.

The alumni web guru's have done a great job updating the site and all the info for schedule's etc are available. Face painting, Pony rides, Ballon House and Mini Olympics and a barbeque are all planned for the day events.

The evening events are adult only and are a cocktail/dinner event with a dance at 9pm all Allegiance Elite members who are over 18 will be required to pay for the night event, which will be led by one of the finest bands in Calgary The Mocking Shadows http://www.mockingshadows.com/

Even if you are not an alumni of the Corps the price to see the Mocking Shadows is well worth it as this band is guaranteed to rock the house, so if you are an alumni with a date who is unsure about coming to a "Drum Corps" reunion tell them who the band is and that they will for sure have a great time.

As well the alumni will be selling a very cool back pack to mark the event $20, this is a great one to carry around and find all the closet marching people at work or on the bus, as they will see the cresting and say "Hey you know DrumCorps" lol...

Cool News!!!

So DCI has been doing a great job of promoting the activity as a whole as the internet presence of our activity is very strong and a large reason why the activity is growing as a whole. Great new ways of checking out the corps are also available such as the recently tested DCI all access pass, the relationship in the States between DCI and Regal cinemas has produced a live quaterfinals production as well as the recent Best of thru the years production. Living in Canada these shows aren't available.... yet but the recent news on the block is the DCI is very close to signing a deal with ESPN to broadcast the Boston Finals as a recap package, much like has been done on PBS thru the years. Hopefully this will somehow make it up to Canada, if anyone has ESPN or ESPN2 let us know in the fall !!!!

Great work as the activity is really reaching out to showcase the fine performers and performances that will happen this summer.

Exciting Music Magic News!!!

So Allegiance Elite hosts an annual show at McMahon stadium on the Saturday following the Stampede parade, this year the event will be held on July 9th. This year we where planning to not only host a show but a social event after the show for all the bands, family, friends, alumni and supporters. Finding a spot to host the event was a much harder task.

It is with great excitement that I can announce that McMahon stadium is allowing us to host this event in the West parking lot of McMahon. John with McMahon has been very helpfull in allowing us to add this new element to Music Magic of which we are very excited about. Shows are about interacting and having a great time not only as a fan but as a marching member, and know we will get a chance to offer all of the Music Magic supporters to socialize after a great show. We hope to have a real Div II/III picnic type of feel to the evening!!!

So it is official, keep tuned to the website for more details as we are sending out invites as we speak and we are hoping to have some very popular bands out for the show as in the past this event has attracted bands from Australia, Taiwan and from across the US and Canada. It will also be the first chance to see the 2005 Allegiance Elite on the field with Pandora's Box!!!

Drum Corps in Canada

So this weekend was a great weekend for the corps as we moved ahead into Pandora's Box, it is also a interesting time to juxtapose what we do here in Canada with the majority of the Drum Corps community which are American based. American college and high schools are finishing up for the year in the next week or so and our American counterparts are looking ahead to getting an early start on the Drum Corps season.

The majority of the Division I corps are starting move in this weekend as they will undergo about 3 1/2 weeks of spring training before starting the season around June 17th with actual competitive shows. Some Div 1 Corps will average up to 30 competitive shows this summer as some will travel from coast to coast to coast, spending up to 2 months on the road. The demands of these corps travel and performance wise are extreme, the average member is High school senior to college university age so the maturity of the ensemble allows for these demands.

The division II/III corps will be starting as well this coming weekend with a less extreme rehearsal schedule some rehearsing every weekend from now until July only performing on Friday and Saturday night shows. Average member is of high school age so a more appropriate rehearsal schedule is demanded, but the early end to the US high schools allows for these corps to get a great jump on the July season.

So as we finish our May long weekend the rest of the Drum Corps community is humming with activity as move in and spring training and weekend camps are happening across North America. With the late end of the Canadian School system Allegiance will have one of the latest starts in the Drum Corps community, as July 1st we will start our spring training and then into Stampede performances and then pre tour prep and the tour. Corps we will be competing with will have a few shows as well as some touring under their belt when we meet up in Garden City, Kansas on the 24th of July.

This is one of the best challenges of being a Canadian Corps as we can show that we can compete with Corps from across North America with a shorter season and tour, by means of practicing smart and effectively and using our resources wisely.

2005 Allegiance Elite Tour and Summer Packing List

Sleeping bag (lightweight and compact). In the past bed roles have gotten a bit out of control so choose wisely. Airbeds are nice, just be considerate and remember sometimes space is limited.
§ Pillow
§ Blanket (for the bus)
§ Sunscreen (apply everyday even if it is cloudy)
§ Water Jug (1/2 gal or larger)
§ One soft sided suitcase or duffel bag that will hold at least 14 days worth of clothes. Please be realistic when choosing a bag. Remember that there are only 2 busses and 70 people in the corps. It is always a tight fit.
§ Laundry bag and detergent
§ T-shirts, shorts, socks, underwear, etc. (about 14 days worth)
§ A pair of clothes for cold weather
§ Shower sandals (cheap ones for the locker room)
§ Shampoo, conditioner, soap
§ Deodorant!
§ Razors
§ Personal toiletries (feminine products, Gold bond, etc.)
§ Toothbrush and toothpaste
§ Comb, brush, hairdryer, curling iron
§ Hairspray, gel
§ Hair ties, scrunches, etc. (Hair must be tucked up into your shako off the back of your neck if it is long)
§ Gloves (Rehearsal and show gloves. You will need a few pair)
§ Book or magazine (A nice way to relax on bus rides)
§ Advil or other anti-inflammatory
§ Valve oil
§ Guard and stick tape (White and black)
§ Silver polish (Wright’s Silver Cream or Windex) and rag.
§ Dot book on a shoelace. Have a spare in case your first one gets ruined
§ Rehearsal bag (to carry stuff to and from the field)
§ Hat (required for horns and highly recommended for everyone else)
§ DCT, or chap stick with sunscreen
§ Black t-shirts for shows (to be supplied by Corps)
§ Show shoes
§ Bus food (nice, but don’t go overboard)
§ Braces or athletic tape for any body part that requires it
§ Set of free day clothes
§ Phone card for calling home (cell phones work too, but don’t be the guy/gal who talks on the phone and never gets to know his/her fellow corps mates)
§Extra pair of contact lenses or your glasses
§Leave valuables at home (ie: MP3 player, X-Box)
§Suggested spending money is $150 - $200 (US & Canadian-small bills only). This will be locked up for you in Allegiance safe and issued in small amounts.
Remember that you will be packing all your gear through the summer, please think twice before you bring that extra something as it will be with you for the summer.

Okay May Long Weekend (that was for you Chooch lol)

This was the Corps last camp of the year and really a pre cursor to the summer as the extra day really gives the weekend a feel of the summer. Weather wise no rain but it was very windy all weekend, obviously this affects the corps as standing learning drill in gusting winds can be very taxing physically as well as mentally. But as good drum corps must do you have to deal with all conditions as this summer heat, rain, wind will all be rehearsed in and the corps has to be able to rehearse effectively no matter what conditions. I would say this weekend was mission accomplished as the kids did not let the wind affect them as we came away with a very good looking "Plagues" (for May Long Weekend lol..) by Monday. And it spoke volumes about the maturity of the corps to be able to handle the weather conditions.

Some highlights of where the corps is at, Drumline still missing some out of town snares but members from Nevada and Tokyo where in and doing a great job. The extra 10 days of 4hr blocks before the full corps move in will make a huge difference as the snare line will get a chance to be together. Pit looking very nice, as we look to fill in a couple of spots but very talented keyboard players are very fun to watch.

Colorguard, size wise and talent wise doing very nicely, the girls have a great attitude and a couple additions of some experienced members this weekend are very positive. The girls all get along very well which bodes well for a great guard this summer.

Hornline, still looking to fill 4 spots but looking very good, out of town members with first year marching with the corps I am excited to have in town for move in, as the progression at corps camps is great, I can't wait to see them after a week of rehearsal !!! Attitude of the hornline this year is very very good as they all look out for one another and have the right mindset and approach to wanting to work hard and get better.

Overall the weekend was a highlight to the summer as the Drumcorps season is not about competition and scores but about the journey and the lessons taught thru the framework of a Drumcorps season.

A big thanks to all the volunteers over the weekend as all uniforms where cleaned, sized and hemmed Thanks Laura and Mom!!! Truck training and driving was handled by Dana and Wayne, as well as quad repair and truck repairs. All the food was great so a huge thanks to Tracy and Michelle for all the pre cooking and to Joy, Gail and Alvina for making sure we where all well fed. And a huge thanks to Nancy Price as the Bingo double event on Saturday was well taken care, of so thanks to all the volunteers that came out over the long weekend for a Saturday bingo.

The percussion ensemble is coming along very nicely as the 2 classes are now really starting to get into a routine and music and technique is starting to happen. The energy and enthusiasm of the kids is very exciting, it is hard to believe that we are almost half way thru the program!!!

The Grandin show on Friday was also great as the Showband season is looking very good, we are excited to be joining these groups in performance before we leave on tour as we will get a chance to perform pre tour in 2 Showband events here in Calgary and then in Red Deer in July, it is always interesting to squeeze our football field show into the hockey arena dimensions. The bands on Friday looked great and everyone was much improved from Red Deer so that goes to show the hard work that all the bands are putting in!!!

On the staff side some exciting news, about 3 weeks ago we found out that Troy Thrower would not be able to join us for the summer due to family commitments, Troy was to be an exciting addition to our team, well the search was on for a Brass guy for the tour and we have found a very exciting addition to the Allegiance Elite staff. Mark Dunton who worked with the Fusion Staff last year is back this year to work with the Allegiance Elite, Mark is currently a Band Director at Waconia High school http://www.waconiaband.com/marchingband/main.asp Waconia will be up for the Stampede Parade this year as well, Mark's background is excellent as a 5 year veteran of the Madison Scouts hornline and accomplished Band Director we are excited to add him as a leader of our Brass program over the summer tour.

Okay this week looks to be good as Natsumi is in from Japan on Thursday, we have members flying in from Ontario and Nevada for camp as well as members from across Alberta and Saskatchewan as the ever so important May Long Weekend is fast approaching. The May long weekend is our most important camp of the year and we are expecting big things as we look to tackle Plagues on the field and have half of the drill finished by the end of the weekend.

No Rehearsal this Friday Bishop Grandin Show!!!!

No Rehearsal this Friday as all members are required to attend the Bishop Grandin Invitational at the Max Bell Arena at 7pm admission is $5 an this is mandatory attendance for all Allegiance Elite members.

If you have volunteered for the show please arrive at 6pm at the Max Bell and we will meet with Scott Bailey to be assigned volunteer jobs for the evening, jobs include tickets, 50/50, seating and etc.. If you have volunteered you will not have to pay gate admission.

We will also have a display table set up so we will need volunteers for this as well.

Allegiance Elite is excited to help support Bishop Grandin at what is sure to be a great event!!!

Red Deer was an awesome show and this show looks to be even better!!!!

As well the Stampede Show Band will be hosting a show on May 28th at the Saddledome, which is a Saturday evening which will be the last Showband show before the summer so keep that on your calender as well.

Board Meeting/Volunteering

So another great board meeting last night as the goal of reaching a 9:30 conclusion was closer lol... Some of the topics addressed where our current safety practices i.e scaffolding and general OH & S, summer plans i.e tour, equipment and looking ahead to planning to next year. Another great meeting and it seems like just yesterday we started the year and now we are already heading into plans for 2006!!! I would like to thank the full Board for all of the dedication and commitment to the corps this season as without the guidance and knowledge they bring this whole thing would not be possible, so a big thanks to you all !!!!

There have also been some other great volunteering going on for the corps that I would like to acknowledge, Sharon has worked on our new pamphlet for 2006 and it looks great, she has also done other graphic design for us, so a huge Thanks!!!!

Martin was in yesterday fixing the heater in the truck, and Dana Scott is prepping to do a little sandblasting on the exterior as well as modifying our keyboards with new tires as per new DCI guidelines.

Carrie is in every Thursday working with Dorothy making sure our accounting practices are top notch and that we are on top of our bookkeeping. As well we have Chris working on tour planning and getting us ready for the summer.

Staff wise Troy is always working on the site as well as Jeff and Jay keeping tabs on our media for the year, Stacey is organizing fundraiser as well as keeping in touch with the hornline on a regular basis.

Nancy does tireless work chairing all our Bingo Barn Events, organizing and working well every Barn event for this we are very thankful as she does a great job!!!! Tracy chairs all our Kings events as well as heads up the camp cooking as well she will be on tour as head cook as well !!!!

Not to mention all the parents that work all the bingo events, as well as all the parents that are volunteering for the summer for driving and for cooking.

For all the work you do a big thanks from all the members!!!!! And as we enter the busiest season we are looking for more support as we get ready for the summer some of those areas include..

Schanks was great!!!

Awesome job by Stacey as we kicked off the bring Daan and Thijs fundraiser at Schanks Saturday night, a buffet and silent auction where great as we had members, alumni, parents and friends came out to help support Allegiance Elite members. Stacey and David Jones did a great job of lining up some great silent auction items, and bidding was fierce, especially for a certain limited edition t-shirt lol... Sorry Chad lol..

As a first time Schanks visitor I can tell you it is the Sports fan's dream as I think everything from Guatemala leg wrestling to Austrian checkers are covered on the many tv's. The night was a perfect example of how much support the corps has and a pre cursor towards the much larger Reunion on June 25th, organized by the alumni, and then to Music Magic which we are planning to have a social event after this year as well. So stay tuned for more Drum Corps social events this year!!!

So great Job Stacey as we are all very excited to welcome Dann and Thijs to the corps this summer!!!!

The faces may have changed over the last few years but this still promises to be a very fun event. I had a chance to attend a meet and greet a few years back at St Johns and ask Chuck Dallenbach of the Star/Brass Theater experience namely his experience with Donnie and Jim Mason, and he was blown away by the work ethic and dedication to craft that the Star members had shown during the brasss theatre shows. It was very interesting to see the crossover between such a legit performance ensemble and the Drum Corps world, one group performs at Carnegie the others Carnegie is Gillette Stadium lol...

Weekend and the Week

Well the weather was not the greatest this past weekend and it really made the last camp weekend seem like a tropical holiday, hopefully that is the last spell of cold, though I do hear Calgary has typical May Long Weekend snowstorm.

Alvina and I where off to Edmonton for the weekend, on the way back on Sunday we stopped in and caught the back half of the Red Deer Royals home show at the centrium, this is the start to the local band season as 2 weekends from now will be the Grandin show and then the Stampede Showband show at the end of the month.

For all you American readers, in Canada the marching Band season is reversed, in the States the competitive season runs thru the fall inline with the Football season with Bands of America and the USSBA typically ending in November, obviously this type of schedule has developed, as in the States marching bands are mostly very connected to the football season.

In Canada a fall season would be a risky adventure as a snowfall could happen as early as October lol.... and as well most of the Bands are more community marching bands without a connection to a school or football team, making a spring and summer season the focus.
Alberta and especially Calgary are blessed with a very strong and high quality showband scene with great bands such as Round Up, Stetsons and Stampede Showband and Bishop Grandin High School and the from Red Deer the Red Deer Royals.

Allegiance is fortunate as we are able to perform at some of these Showband shows at the begining of our season in July which is actually the end of the Showband season, as we will join the showbands in Red Deer on July 20th and here in Calgary on July 12th during Stampede, this is a great way for the Corps to get a couple of shows under our belt before we head out on the Drum Corps International Tour.

2005 Allegiance Elite Summer Colorguard Camp
July 4th to 9th
Come Join us in the Calgary Stampede Parade
The Allegiance Elite is proud to invite students age 10 to 14 in joining us in a 6 day summer Colorguard and Dance camp, this camp is all about learning dance, equipment work and most of all having FUN!!!!
The most exciting part is you will have a chance to join our 70 member marching band in the world famous Calgary Stampede Parade on July 8th and then perform the next night at McMahon Stadium at the Allegiance Elite home show Music Magic!!!!

So what are the details…

Dates: July 4th thru 7th daily rehearsals from 1pm to 5pm in NE Calgary
July 8th Perfom in the Calgary Stampede Parade
July 9th Perform at McMahon Stadium

What is Colorguard?
Colorguard is responsible for the visual component of a marching ensemble, modern dance and equipment work with flags and rifles are integrated to entertain and provide the visual component of a marching show. Colorguard is all about movement and equipment and most of important having fun and relating that to an audience.

What will we learn at camp?
An introduction to colorguard and dance is what this camp is all about, beginner students are all welcome as this is a program for beginners. Learning how to spin a flag and the basics of dance movement will be taught over the week, physical activity is what colorguard is all about. As well the 2005 Allegiance Elite parade routine will be taught, as all participants will be joining the Allegiance Elite in the Stampede parade. This production will be a full ensemble performance of drums, brass and colorguard and will include the full Allegiance Elite ensemble.

Cost?
The cost of the program is $200, included in this cost is all uniform and equipment needed as well participation t-shirts will be given out at the end of the camp. This fee is due upon registration for the camp.

Camp Weekend

So we where off to Brooks for the weekend and any fear of rain was wiped out by sunny skys all weekend long as the weather was perfect. As usual we had the sunburns, every year without fail it happens as Drumcorps is not only learning about playing and marching but learning how to deal with the sun, and taking care of your body. Overall it was a great weekend, as we where able to make it thru the opener drill playing and marching, and thing s where looking pretty good by Sunday.

I was most impressed by the way the Corps rehearsed this weekend, understanding that a Drum Corps is only as good as it practices was very evident over the course of the weekend, maintaining a system is what makes you get good fast and understanding what your role of contribution to that system is very important, this was very evident over the weekend as the kids did a great job of recieving information, processing it and then applying it on the field. So a huge Kudos to the corps for doing a great job over the weekend, the drill for the second movement looks great and we are very excited to get it out on the field!!!!

Also big thanks to Wayne and Dana for all the driving on the weekend as well as Tracy, Joy , Michelle, Mellissa and Alvina who came out for the weekend and made sure the kids where well fed and as well helped get a jump on our uniforms for the summer, the smooth camp was a testament to the great job these guys put in.

Next camp we will have all the kids sized and fitted for pants and uniforms tunics.

We also where able to get a spring cleaning on the truck done as everything was cleared out, cleaned and vacumned, we will be painting the interior before next camp as well on May long we are looking to spruce up things as well. If you are interested in spending anytime working on the truck let me know, I know there may be some university guys with time on thier hands lol..
We want to make sure the truck looks just as good as the corps on the field this summer!!!!

So a big thanks to everyone for a great April camp, and I can say for sure May long weekend is set to be great weekend!!!!

We had to split the class into 2 the first class is the 9 to 11 year olds and the second is the 12 to 14 year olds, I have to say that Thursday nights are a lot more exciting around the office!!!! Well at least louder!!!!

Well a slow drumcorps weekend as the bingo Sunday night as well as driver training for the summer where the highlights, we are all looking forward to the camp this weekend and hoping the weather will hold as we head outside for drill. The week looks like,

Camp prep, meeting with Chris for tour planning, Summer Guard planning, facility booking.

Winter???

So this morning it was snowing, hmmmm well I would rather have it snow now than next week, maybe it just needs to happen now so that we have clear sailing for next weekend as we head outside to start the drill of which the corps is eagerly awaiting.

I also had to cancel our participation in the Bishop Grandin Invitational in the early part of May, as the the majority of the kids are not able to make it, seeing how a large part of the corps this year is from out of town, performances outside of the summer are very difficult. Grandin has been great to the corps and we are very excited about thier show, hopefully next year things will work out.

On the flipside we look to be at Banff for sure as well as Canmore on the 1st of July as well the percussion ensemble will be performing locally so the 1st should be a great day for the corps, this will be my first Calgary Canada Day so it should be a lot of fun as I hear Canmore is a great place to spend Canada Day. Hopefully it is alot like 4th of July in Aspen as any BlueKnight Alumni will tell you is a blast.

As well there has been a few changes in the tour schedule that will be announced soon as DCI looks to finalize the summer contracts and such, nothing to major though.

Summer Color Guard Camp!!!!!

Allegiance Elite will be presenting a unique and exciting experience for local kids this summer, as we present the Allegiance Elite Summer Colorguard Camp for students aged 10 to 14 !!!!

Here is the info

July 4th to July 9th
4 Days of Rehearsal and Fun!!!
On July 8th all participants will be joining the Allegiance Elite Drum and Bugle Corps in the 2005 Calgary Stampede Parade!!!!!
July 9th all participants will perform at McMahon Stadium in the Allegiance Elite Music Magic Home Show!!!!

Getting out in the sun and learning about the basics of dance and colorguard is what this program is all about, then using these skills the summer colorguard will join the Allegiance Colorguard in a combined performance that will be used in the 2005 Stampede Parade, we plan to march one of the largest Allegiance Elite Colorguards ever for the Stampede. Who doesn't want to be a part of the magic that is a nationally televised event and a institution in the City of Calgary and Western Canada.

What a Great Start!!!

Okay I have been eagerly waiting to post this as last night was a great night as we kicked off the new Allegiance Elite Percussion Ensemble program. Things went extremly well as we welcome 15 new kids into the Allegiance Elite percussion program. Talking to the parents and getting the kids a chance to see the gear and make some noise was what the evening was all about. Drumming is really an infectious thing and it was really evident thru the night as we even had parents taking the kits for a ride. Donnie was great as meeting all the kids and giving some background on where the program is going and plans for the ensemble where all presented, this is just the first step as we work to build a strong well rounded percussion program that can stretch outside of the world of marching as well. This is also great as we are looking to this as a framework for the 2 other sections as well the brass and colorguard/dance, so alot of great experience is being utilized.

Big thanks go out to for sure Donnie as he has been in here prepping and getting things ready, and has really personally invested himself into the program. Jared and Jessie for coming out and doing some great demonstrations, thanks guys!!!! Dorothy and Alvina for handling all the paperwork and registration, now we have 2 super organizers to make sure we are on top of things. And of course to the Board of Directors for putting the support behind this in the first place.

So alot of hard work from here to the summer to get the kids excited and get ready for some great summer performances., we are still accepting applications until next week so if you are still interested please contact the office asap.

Registration Night

Well tonight is the first night for the percussion ensemble as we hold registration night here at the corps hall, here is the lowdown for the evening.

Registration
6:30 to 8:30

Donnie, Jessie and Jared will be doing demonstrations
I will be outlining the curriculm and focus of the group, which includes 13 total lessons, lessons include
- music reading
- basic technique (snare drum)
- drumkit technique
- Rhythym and Groove
- basic mallet reading and technique
- ensemble playing
- ensemble performance

As well the kids will be performing during the summer as a percussion ensemble, we currently have plans for 4 performances during the summer as well. This is a great chance for kids to really get a taste of drumming and percussion in a fun and non competitive enviroment, if you are interested make sure you come out or contact the office asap!!!

This is also the forerunner to other programs that will soon be announced in more detail namely our summer colorguard camp, and as we look to the fall beginner trumpet lessons, so it is exciting as we get the ball rolling on some new and unique opportunities.

I am not to sure how many of you are big Star of Indiana fans but there is a great site that has a lot of Bill Cook stuff on it, some recollections as well as some insight into the corps and what it took to become what they are known as today, a legend in the field of Drum Corps.

I really enjoy how candid Mr Cook is as this is a man that runs one of the largets companies in the United States and he is able to let us in to his passion for the activity. I always thought it was cool as well how he used to post on RAMD, taking the time to answer questions about the corps years after they had left the competitive scene, just the fact that he took the time spoke volumns about how he felt for the activity.

Lee is one of the men behind the succesfull Renegades Senior Drum Corps, they basically took a corps from scratch and well made it happen. He also has a great blog for people wanting to get some insight from a guy that knows how to market Drum Corps.

As well if anyone knows the link to Nik Pilato's on line writing's let me know as I read them awhile back but can't seem to find them, Nik was a former drum major of the Regiment and has some great stories as well.
